The 2011 USATF Montana Association Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships returns to Butte on June 17-18, 2011. This event will serve as the qualifier for the Region 11 Track & Field Championships to be held at Northwest Nazareth College in Nampa, Idaho on June 23-25.

Triathlon and pentathlon events will be hosted along with the 3,000 meter and 5, 000 meter runs on Friday. All other track & field events will be hosted on Saturday except for the decathlon and heptathlon, which will be held in Great Falls on June 3-4, 2011. The steeplechase and hammer throw will not be contested at the Association championships.

Top five athletes in the track and field events and multi-events automatically advance to the Region 11 Track & Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho. However, all athletes having participated in the Association championships with a current 2011 USATF membership card may advance to the Region 11 Championships.

Keep in mind that the USA Track & Field format offers a variety of options to athletes that are not generally available during the regular outdoor season; including the hammer throw, mini-javelin, steeplechase, 4 x 800 relay, 3000 and 5000 meter runs, race walk competition, and multi-events. This is a great opportunity for athletes to advance in other disciplines of track & field that are not typically available during the regular outdoor track season.

The multi-events (i.e., decathlon, heptathlon, pentathlon, and triathlon), a popular competition at the collegiate and world class level, tests the fortitude and ability of extraordinary athletes. It involves an athlete competing in a number of events run close together on a very scheduled time frame. To score, you receive points for levels of performance in each event. The goal is to earn the most points versus going head-to-head in each individual competition.

The triathlon and pentathlon multi-events will be held on Friday, June 17 in conjunction with the Association championships in Butte. The decathlon and heptathlon multi-event will be hosted in Great Falls on June 3-4 at Great Falls High School Memorial Stadium. A pentathlon for youth division athletes will also be hosted in Great Falls as an introduction to the multi-event competition format. For more information contact Paul Johnson at 406-791-5928 office, 360-913-4884 cell, or e-mail address pjohnson01@ugf.edu, or see download for more information for the decathlon and heptathlon.

The Association Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships will offer six age divisions for athlete’s 18 years old and younger with medals awarded to the top five finishers in each division. Athletes born in 1993 must turn 19 after August 1, 2011 to be eligible. Age divisions include the "sub-bantam" age division for athletes 8 years old or younger with the right to bragging rights and the chance to step onto the awards stand.

Athletes who have participated in one of the four Association Track & Field Championships (i.e., Montana, Snake River, Utah and Wyoming), regardless of finish, may advance to the USATF Junior Olympic Region 11 Track & Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho as long as they hold an active 2011 USATF membership card.

Athletes who have conflicts with the scheduled date for a scheduled association championship due to extenuating circumstances may also advance to the Region 11 championships on a case-by-case basis upon formal approval by the association’s youth athletics chair. This should be addressed at least one week before the on-line registration deadline for the particular association championship in each state.

Medals and ribbons will be awarded to the top five finalists in each of the events with hats, T-shirts, and prizes available at the venue.

USA Track & Field goes to on-line registration at www.coacho.com for all Junior Olympic events this year for both track & field and cross-country events.
